Governing Bodies

Softball Governing Bodies

There are five major governing bodies for Fastpitch and Slowpitch play: United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA), Amateur Softball Association (ASA), the National Softball Association (NSA), Independent Softball Association (ISA), and International Softball Federation (ISF).

Every league and tournament will abide by one or more of these sanctioning body rules. Depending on the what organization you are playing with, your softball bat will require these stamps in order to be eligible for use. By far, the two largest governing bodies are ASA and USSSA.

What do these stamps mean?

Each governing body has to be sure bats used are safe for play, so they require softball bat manufacturers to build bats to certain standards. This assures two things: A level playing field, and player safety.

When you are looking for a new softball bat you may notice several stamps on your bat like this.
